A Bike for Malawi

Hi Everyone,

Just today at Project HOPE I was able to hear Rodrick Nalikungwi, our country director in Malawi, talk about the remarkable inroads they are making in helping stop the spread of TB in their country.

Here's what happens: community members choose a central collection site for sputum samples. Residents must have their samples to the "office" by 10 a.m. Then a health care worker begins walking to the regional testing laboratory, which in some cases is over three hours away. This worker obtains the results from testing which was done the day before, walking back home his three hours, then gives the prior day's reports to the waiting patients.

What HOPE wants to do is purchase bikes for the community health care workers in Malawi. The faster these workers get to the labs with samples, the faster patients can be diagnosed, treated and cured. Every penny you contribute will go toward the $168 needed to purchase a bike, spare parts and train the user on upkeep and repair.
